Subscribing to Forward using FreshRSS's XPath Scraping

FreshRSS's XPath scraping continues to be a "killer feature": here's how I'm using it to follow webcomic Forward.

    Solving Jigidi... Again

Frustrated that nobody on the Internet has solved my problem for me, here's my guide to configuring Listmonk on an Unraid server.

    Bypassing Region Restrictions on radio.garden

As the last person on Earth to discover radio.garden, I was disappointed to find that you can't access non-UK stations from within the UK. So I "fixed" it.

    UK Strikes in .ics Format

Need all the UK strike action in your calendar app? I just helped a coworker with that, and I'm happy to share the results with you.

    Scottish-Mexican Fusion Cookery

Haggis tacos? Tattie scone quesadillas? Bean chilli stovies? I'm convinced there's mileage in Scottish-Mexican fusion cuisine, and I want to persuade you too.

  • Dan, wearing a warm weatherproof black jacket and a purple "Woo" woolen hat, alongside a 9-year-old girl wrapped up in a faux-leapordskin hat and an iridescent coat, against a snowy hillside with rolling clouds.

That Moment When You Forget Somebody's Dead

For the first time in years, perhaps, I had that "moment of forgotting my dad was dead" thing.

  • Diagram showing a password safe on a desktop computer being used to fill the username and password parts of a login form, and a mobile phone providing the information for the second factor.

Keeping 2FA Secrets in a Password Safe?

I use my password manager to generate TOTP second factor codes. I know this is controversial, with some folks claiming it reduces multifactor authentication down to a single factor and is therefore no better than just a username/password, but I disagree, and I can explain why.

  • A party of unlikely characters stands around and points accusingly at the "murderer" among them: it's Kirsty.

    Murder in the Library

Our first in-person murder mystery party in a long time was a success, and a great time was had by all.

  • Screenshot showing my webpage, "The Page With No Code". Using white text (and some emojis) on a blue gradient background, it describes the same thought process as I describe in this blog post, and invites the reader to "View Source" and see that the page genuinely does appear to have no code.

    The Page With No Code

View Source shows nothing, but the page has content. The Page With No Code is the kind of puzzle that makes web developers unhappy.

I'd Like to Change my Mother's Maiden Name

LastPass users are having to cycle their passwords in the light of a recent security incident. That might well include their "security question" answers, which necessarily leads to some amusing conversations.

  • Composite screenshot showing Windows Media Player, the (old) iTunes companion widget, KMPlayer, and other media players. All of them have unusually-shaped windows, often with organic corners.

Why Did Media Players Look Like That?

As MP3s took off, early player software looked... weird and ugly. To this day, I can't understand why.

The proxy I implemented to bypass The Far Side's lack of an RSS feed is now unnecessary, because FreshRSS is better than ever.
